Video - Chankanaab Lagoon

Learn more about the Chankanaab Lagoon*The Chankanaab Lagoon is one of Cozumel’s most singular natural spaces. Its name, of Mayan origin, is commonly interpreted as “small sea” - a simple description that holds a deeper truth: an inland body of water that quietly dialogues with the island’s surrounding ocean.Since ancient times, the presence of fresh water on an island was something extraordinary. For the original cultures of the region, such places held not only practical value, but also symbolic meaning. Water represented life, balance, and a connection to what cannot be seen. In this sense, the Chankanaab Lagoon can be understood as a natural threshold—a point of transition between the open sea and the island’s deeper memory.Throughout the twentieth century, the lagoon was recognized by the local community as a site of exceptional ecological and scenic value. That recognition led, in 1983, to its formal protection as a natural area, marking the beginning of a collective effort to preserve it, care for it, and share it with future generations. Chankanaab was not born as a park; it was born as a cause for conservation.Today, the lagoon retains its serene character. Its calm waters reflect the sky, the surrounding vegetation, and the passage of time, reminding us that nature also tells stories when it is allowed to endure. More than a setting, it is a living space where science, community memory, and a profound cultural relationship with water converge.Within the Reef Pathway, the Chankanaab Lagoon represents the first heartbeat of the journey. It is not only the physical beginning of an experience, but the place where visitors begin to understand that Cozumel is more than an island surrounded by sea—it is a territory where nature, history, and the sacred are deeply intertwined. Here, the journey does not begin in haste.
It begins with calm, with silence, and with water.

Jungle, lagoons, lighthouse, and open horizons. A journey through Cozumel’s most natural and wild side, where biodiversity, landscape, and stillness invite a deeper connection with the island’s living essence.

Punta Sur is where the island opens to wind, sea, and silence. Here, jungle, lagoon, and horizon coexist in an ancient balance shaped by nature and time. This territory has long served as a place of orientation, shelter, and contemplation, where the landscape reveals Cozumel’s deeper character. Now protected as a natural reserve, Punta Sur remains a meeting point of history, biodiversity, and the living force of the Sacred Island.

Learn more about Punta Sur

At the southern tip of Cozumel, Punta Sur -historically known as Punta Celaráin- has served since pre-Hispanic times as a territory of orientation, observation, and refuge. Here, the open sea, the jungle, and lagoon systems converge in a landscape that has guided navigators and communities through time.Archaeological remains such as "El Caracol" confirm Maya presence in the area and reinforce Punta Sur’s role as a strategic point of observation and connection with the natural environment. In its surroundings, evidence has been found that points to an ancient maritime tradition, where knowledge of the sky, the stars, and the winds was essential for navigation.During the modern era, Punta Celaráin strengthened its role as a maritime reference with the installation of a metal lighthouse attributed to the Eiffel Company, later replaced by the current concrete lighthouse, which rises 33.3 meters above ground level and features 133 steps leading to its summit. From there, the southern horizon of the island opens as it has for generations of those guided by the sea.Beside the lighthouse stands the former lighthouse keeper’s house (dated to 1907 in tourism and cultural references), which today houses the Navigation Museum. This space traces Cozumel’s historical relationship with the sea, from pre-Hispanic references to modern navigation, and preserves the memory of the families who, generation after generation, safeguarded this essential point for maritime safety in the Caribbean.Beyond its historical value, Punta Sur is today the largest ecological reserve on Cozumel. Its territory protects a complex lagoon system, led by Colombia Lagoon, as well as extensive mangrove areas that serve as biodiversity refuges, natural water filters, and living barriers that protect the coastline. This balance between jungle, wetlands, and sea makes Punta Sur a key area for environmental conservation.Cozumel Island, internationally recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, finds in Punta Sur one of its clearest examples of coexistence between history, nature, and the protection of natural heritage. Here, the island reveals its deepest character: a territory where the past, wildlife, and landscape continue to guide the course of the Sacred Island.

Temple, pilgrimage, and living memory.
San Gervasio was one of the island’s most important ceremonial centers and a place of worship dedicated to Ixchel, goddess of fertility, the moon, and life.

San Gervasio is the sacred heart of Cozumel.
A place where time slows down and stone holds memory.
Along ancient Maya paths and ceremonial structures, this site served for centuries as a pilgrimage destination for women arriving from distant lands to honor Ixchel, goddess of life, the moon, and fertility. Here, the jungle is not a backdrop — it is part of the ritual. Every trail, every ruin, and every silence reveals a profound connection between humanity, nature, and the sacred.San Gervasio is not only walked, it is understood with reverence and felt with the spirit.

HOW TO EXPERIENCE THE SACRED PATHWAY
A land of pilgrimage, memory, and spiritual connection

San Gervasio is not experienced in layers. It is approached with respect. This ancient Maya ceremonial center was a place of pilgrimage dedicated to Ixchel, goddess of the moon, fertility, and life. Each structure remains a sacred space, where time, stone, and silence still speak.

Learn more about San Gervasio

San Gervasio was the principal Maya city on Cozumel Island, first occupied around the 3rd century AD and inhabited until the Spanish arrival in the 16th century. The site reached its peak between 1000 and 1450 AD as part of a vibrant political and trade network linked to inland centers such as Chichén Itzá.Historically, this archaeological complex has been regarded as one of the most important pilgrimage centers in the Maya world: women from across the region would journey here to pay homage to Ixchel, the goddess of fertility, the moon, medicine, and weaving.San Gervasio spans several kilometers and is made up of architectural groups and ancient Maya roads (sacbéo’ob) that connect plazas, temples, and ceremonial structures.Among its most significant buildings are complexes constructed between the 10th and 15th centuries, reflecting both everyday life and religious ritual within the community. Residential areas, central plazas, and ceremonial constructions bear witness to its role as a spiritual, social, and administrative hub.Today, San Gervasio is the most important archaeological site on Cozumel, administered by Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) and protected as a lasting testimony to the Pre-Columbian Maya culture and the pilgrimage practices that shaped ritual life across the Caribbean.

History, identity, and shared memory. The Island Museum tells the story of Cozumel as a living territory shaped by the sea, migration, culture, and the resilience of its people.Through permanent and temporary exhibitions, the museum connects the island’s pre-Hispanic roots, colonial history, maritime heritage, everyday life, and the social processes that continue to shape Cozumel today.More than a museum, it is a space of collective memory—where visitors understand that the island is not only explored, but remembered, interpreted, and passed on.

The Island Museum is where Cozumel tells its own story. Here, history is not presented as a simple timeline, but as a living memory shaped by the sea, migration, culture, and everyday island life.Through objects, images, and narratives, the museum reveals Cozumel as a port, a refuge, a community, and a territory in constant transformation. This space invites visitors to understand that the island’s identity lives not only in its landscapes, but also in the stories of those who have inhabited, navigated, and cared for it through time.

Learn more about the Island Museum

The Island Museum of Cozumel is, at once, memory, place, and meeting point. Its history is deeply intertwined with that of the island itself and with one of its most defining moments: the repopulation of Cozumel. After centuries of partial abandonment following disease outbreaks and post-conquest conflicts, Cozumel began a process of repopulation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. New families arrived, settled, and rebuilt island life, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Cozumel’s history.Within this context, the building that now houses the museum was one of Cozumel’s first hotels, constructed in the 1930s in downtown San Miguel. From this place, the island began to open itself to the world, welcoming travelers at a time when Cozumel was still a remote destination, connected primarily by the sea. With the founding of the Island Museum in 1987, the space evolved into a guardian of Cozumel’s identity. The former hotel became a cultural institution dedicated to preserving and interpreting the island’s natural, historical, and social heritage, growing alongside Cozumel’s development as a cultural and tourism destination.Through its permanent galleries and temporary exhibitions, the museum traces Cozumel’s story from its geological origins and pre-Hispanic Maya world, through the colonial era, piracy, repopulation, and the island’s consolidation as a resilient, living territory shaped by the sea.Today, the museum does more than tell Cozumel’s story: it connects past, present, and future, inviting visitors to understand how nature, culture, and community have shaped the Sacred Island we experience today.
